The HSA would like to take a moment to honorably mention some the people who have contributed their time, energy, skills and talents for the benefit of the Society. We will be building this page over time, so check back for more updates.
(Former HSA President Joe O’Brien)
Joseph O’Brien
Joe served as President for the HSA the first time in 1988, and would go on to repeat that role several more times over the years. Joe led the organization to its most financially successful years during his time as President, and oversaw the HSA’s largest, best-attended conferences.
Mr. O’Brien owned and operated WestMark, one of the very first hydroponic nutrient producers in California. WestMark helped pioneer these sciences, and also private-labeled plant food for some of the countries leading hydroponic distributors.
Joe is well known by his colleagues for his warm personality, great sense of humor, ability to strategically plan and his tireless dedication. Current HSA Pres. Dan Lubkeman had this to say about Joe; “His service to the HSA is legendary. “Joe has always been one of my heroes. Working with him was a real honor and I learned a great deal from him in our time together.”
Bea O’Brien, Joe’s wife, was also a regular volunteer and familiar face at the annual conferences. Her presence was always appreciated, her warmth and spirit of selfless service were very contagious. She is fondly remembered by this organization.
The HSA honored Joe with a service award in 1999 at the Oakland conference. Joe and Bea are retired now, living in the bay area in California.
